Passage 2, Collecting as a Hobby, examines what motivates collectors of stamps, teddy bears and beyond. Passage 3, What's the purpose of gaining knowledge?, is a reflective piece by an academic comparing two American universities and their educational missions.
Note completion dominates the cork passage, with eight gaps and five True/False/Not Given. Passage 2 has eight sentence completions and five True/False/Not Given — the sentence completions are tightly worded but track the passage in order, so move sequentially. Passage 3 closes with six headings, a four-gap summary and four Yes/No/Not Given items where the writer's tone is reflective rather than assertive; tease apart his opinions from the institutional positions he describes.
Plan sixteen minutes on cork, twenty on collecting, and twenty-one on the knowledge essay, with three minutes to transfer. Cork oak takes twenty-five years to yield its first harvest — patience is the technique of the day, especially in the reflective Passage 3 where the writer's tone is gently personal.
